FAQs

What does it mean to be a Scottish silversmith?

To be a Scottish silversmith is to work within a long tradition of metalwork shaped by landscape, weather, history and craft lineage. My studio practice is based in the Scottish Highlands, where I create contemporary silver vessels that reflect geological forms, fluidity, and the quiet rhythms of the land.

What makes handmade silverware different from mass-produced silver?

Handmade silverware is created through traditional hammering, raising and forming techniques, where every mark and curve is intentionally shaped. Unlike machine-produced items, each handcrafted piece carries a sense of movement, individuality and the touch of the maker.

What silver do you work with?

I work primarily in sterling silver (925). This silver alloy provides durability while retaining the warmth, brightness and tactile qualities that make silver such a treasured material to hold and use.

Are your silver pieces made to be used, or just displayed?

My vessels are created to be lived with, they may be collected as art objects, but they are also made to be held, used and enjoyed. Silver grows richer and more characterful through touch and time.

How do I care for my silver piece?

Silver naturally develops a patina as it ages. Some collectors enjoy this subtle darkening, while others prefer to keep the surface bright. Light polishing with a silver cloth is all that’s usually required. Avoid abrasive cleaners and dishwashers, hand-wash and dry gently.

Do you accept bespoke commissions?

Yes. I create bespoke pieces for personal rituals, celebrations, shared meals, and ceremonial moments. Commissioning a piece begins with a conversation about intention, scale, form, and material.
